Motionographer.com, site specializing in animation, the infographic, design, and graphic arts in general, devotes a long article to logorama :

There’s been a lot of talk recently about the new animated film, Logorama created and directed by the French design collective, H5. Its particularity, as we all know by now, is that not only does it star the evil killer Ronald McDonald, who is pursued by a bunch of fat Michelin Men cops, it is indeed a film created entirely from logos.

MAY 21 October :

Télérama mentions Logorama in its article “Do you know the Frenche Touche ?” on the monthly show :

Logorama, ensuite. A selected and award-winning film (Critics' Week Grand Prize) at the last Cannes Film Festival, signed by H5, a collective of graphic designers already noticed with the famous clip by Alex Gopher, The Child. Logorama is a chase 15 min in an american city. Sets and characters are all built with hijacked logos. The typographic animation is of a staggering virtuosity. The bad guy is McDonald's clown, the cops are Michelin bibendums, and the Esso pin-up hangs around. The case turns to the taking of hostages… Really strange effect, than to see the contemporary signs of market liberalism incarnate and kill each other in this way. A nightmare where parade Haribo, Avis, Master Card, EMI… but also historical logos such as the RAF of Baader and Meinhof ! Proof that everything has become a label, brand…

MAY 2 July :

Seen on blogs :

The film points the finger at a supreme contemporary paradox : the impossibility of reproducing the reality of parasitic acronyms which nevertheless impose themselves on our sight, (nearly) wherever we are in the urban space.

365 working days

We discover that this collective has no anti-brand desire, on the contrary. And that the first spectators are rather enthusiastic about this UFO.

MAY 30 June :

The magazine Short -the short film magazine- (July August 2009), in their article on Cannes and the courts of the parallel selections mention logorama (see the article) :

Clearly, the Fortnight like the Week each presented in their ranks a film which crushed the rest of the competition. At Stephanie's Palace, it was Montparnasse by Mikhaël Hers, selected in special session. And on the Espace Miramar side, Logorama of the H5 collective.

[…] Therefore, best of the lot, waited moreover for ages, what was Logorama, collective cu H5, three graphic designers responsible for record covers, of clips, pour Björk, Royksopp and others. Produced by Around Midnight (decidedly in a good vein after Lila discovered in Clermont-Ferrand), mixing action film with Hollywood sauce (pleonasm !) and libertarian animation, Logorama features two cops, two Michelin bibendums, in pursuit of a Ronald McDonald taking the kid Haribo hostage. The film rewarded with the Kodak Discovery Award for Best Short, is, we got it, only constituted, for its abundant decorations and its many characters, several hundred logos respectfully undermined in a profusion of signs and colors. A pop work worth revisiting several times, where the evil spirit and embezzlement reign supreme. And one of the graphic shocks (as much as politics) of Cannes 2009

MAY 24 June :

The Notebooks of Cinemas (June 2009), in their article on Cannes and animation cinema, talk about Logorama (see the article) :

Logorama of the H5 collective, already author of fabulous clips including The Child d’Alex Gopher, makes a synthetic thriller, stunning and subversive, whose protagonists and sets, Michelin au cocodile Lacoste, are just logos.

Technikart, on his side, gave an update on the festival and talks about logorama again (see the article) :

By dint of machining clips and advertising for executives who taste little of their d”lires of dirty dogs go, the three little geniuses of the H5 collective ended up exorcising their frustrations by giving birth to the animated short film Logorama, twisting micro-blockbuster where the Michelin bibendum plays the role of Bruce Willis and Ronald McDonald, that of the psychopathic bad guy. Without hesitation the most beautiful cast of the festival (Green Giant cameos, Pringles, of the Haribo kid, of the MGM lion…) and one of its comic highs. There remains a real fear since, for obvious copyright reasons, the film may never be released. Waiting for it on Daily Motion.

We start with Technikart who covered the festival daily and who put Logorama on the cover of the edition of 20 May 2009. Inside you could find an interview with 3 directors (see the article) :

All we wanted was to play legos… with logos…

We wanted to rush into the pile by asking the question : “Do we have the right to represent what surrounds us ? ». When we showed it to people who work for some of these brands, the only thing they said to us was "but how dare you ? ».

The world, also did an interview with the directors, available on video on the dailymotion website. An article on animation in Cannes also talks about it (“plastic stars make the animation in Cannes” on the World website):

The heroes of Logorama are more discreet, we only see them on the screen. The film thrilled its first viewers, but his fate is uncertain. Not sure all brands find the deal funny. For those graphic designers who have worked in advertising, The movie is “a right of reply”, according to the expression of’Hervé de Crécy, one of the directors, a hoax and a way to start a debate on an idea of freedom of expression that allows people to be caricatured but not brands.

Another video interview, much longer, that of the site youngCineaste.net, also available on the website of dailymotion.

Liberation, wrote a short article about the film in his edition of 25 May 2009 (scan available here /release site) :

Logorama is the work of young people that half the planet is snapping up (Alex Gopher music video director, Massive Attack ou Goldfrapp, artistic directors for Dior, Cartier and Saint Laurent, or recent residents of Beaubourg and the MoMa). Their jubilation in abusing these little untouchable symbols of industrial and financial power to the point of outrage, moreover without asking the authorization of the brands in question, is particularly communicative.

In the You are a Magazine special Cannes (#7 21 May 2009) wrote an article - in English- (l'article) :

Impressive visual work has been done, reminiscent of a game of Monopoly, in which we recognize the greatest brands of our time. These are the symbols of our modern world, of our common language - a Monopoly in our minds meaning that everything can be measured in marketing terms.
But is it possible? The excellent humor of the H5s reminds us that there is still a chance to think differently : as long as there is a woman, a man and an apple (Mac preferably), there will always be another milky voice (ndlt : in English “Milky Way”, chocolate brand), somewhere in the universe.

Technikart, back from Cannes, take a stock on the festival and re-talk about the movie (read it in french) :

By dint of machining clips and advertising for executives who taste little of their d”lires of dirty dogs go, the three little geniuses of the H5 collective ended up exorcising their frustrations by giving birth to the animated short film Logorama, twisting micro-blockbuster where the Michelin bibendum plays the role of Bruce Willis and Ronald McDonald, that of the psychopathic bad guy. Technikart, which was daily covering Cannes, has put logorama on cover of may 20 2009 issue. Inside the Technikart you can read an interview (in french) of the 3 directors (see it) :

All what we want was to play Legos… with logos…

We want to forge ahead asking : “Do we have the right to represent what’s arround us?”. When we screened the movie to people who was working for some of this trademarks, the only think they said to us was : “how dare you?”

The world, french newspaper, has also made an interview, available in video on dailymotion (in french). An article called “plastic stars make the animation in Cannes”, talks about Logorama (in The World web page in french) :

Heroes of Logorama are more discreet, we only see them on screen. The film received enthousiastic reviews from public, but movie’s fate is unsafe. It’s not sure that the tradmarks take it good. For this graphists, who comes from advertising, this movie is a “right of reply”, as Hervé de Crecy says, one of the directors, a hoax and a way to begin a debate about the freedom of expression that allow us to moke people but not trademarks.

Another video interview, from the website jeuneCineaste.net (young filmaker), is available on dailymotion too (in french).

Liberation, another french newspaper, has writen a little review of the film (see the scan /liberation’s website) :

Logorama is a film from young people wanted by half of the planet (directors of Alex Gopher, Massive Attack or Goldfrapp music videos, artistic directors for Dior, Cartier or Yves Saint Laurent, or recently guests in Beaubourg and the MoMa). Their rejoicing to mistreat untill the outrage this untouchable little symbols of the industrial and financial power, moreover without asking the rights to the trademarks, is particularly communicative.

You are a Magazine special Cannes (#7 may 21 2009) write a review too (see it) :

An impressive visual artwork has been created, reminiscent of a Monopoly-game, in wich we recognize all the bigest brands of our time. They are actually the symbols of our modern world, our common language –a Monopoly Inside our minds, meaning that evrything can be measured in marketing terms.
But can it ? H5’s excellent humour reminds us that there’s still a chance to think in different way : for as long as there is a woman, a man and an apple (Mac), ther could be another Milky Way, somewhere in the universe.
